Tracking trends that shape the industry

Every month, we provide a pulse check on the frozen potato products industry, helping you stay ahead in a dynamic global market. This month’s data highlights a notable shift in trade patterns—and signals that change is accelerating. What’s new this month? Trade data shows that global trade volume was down 8.9% in February 2025 compared to 2024, and prices were down 2.6%.

Global volume down 8.9% year-over-year, driven by steep declines in Belgian and Dutch exports

In February 2025, global frozen potato product trade reached 704 thousand tonnes, down nearly 68 kT (-8.9%) from the same month in 2024. This drop is entirely explained by export reductions from the Netherlands and Belgium, which fell by 30.9 kT (-21.0%) and 76.1 kT (-27.1%), respectively.

Regional breakdowns reveal a growing trend: Europe is losing ground, while local supply chains are strengthening elsewhere. For instance:

  • Middle Eastern imports from Europe dropped by 18.3 kT, even as regional exports increased.
  • Asian imports from Europe declined by 11.6 kT, while local supply from Asian producers rose.
  • Even within Europe, imports into mature markets like Germany, the UK, Spain, and Italy declined compared to last year.

This growing preference for regional supply points to a structural shift in trade patterns—a development worth monitoring closely.

A glimmer of recovery: Dutch production on the rise - processing volumes hit multi-year highs

Despite the export slowdown, production in the Netherlands tells a more optimistic story. According to VAVI, Dutch potato processors recorded the highest monthly volumes in over three years this April. Between February and April 2025, pre-fried production volumes rose 9% year-over-year.

If this trend continues, it could signal a rebound in Dutch exports in the coming months.
