September trade increase brings YTD volume on 2020 levels
Trade volumes for Dutch cheeses (Gouda, Edam, Maasdam) were up 7.2% year-over-year in September 2021, bringing the year-to-date trade volume to the same level of 2020. The difference is mainly driven by lower trade volumes in the first half of the year, whilst trade volumes were above previous years' levels in July and August. Prices were up 3.9% in September, whilst the average year-to-date price is up 2.2% at €3.69/kg.

Germany supplies most of the additional trade volume
The majority of the additional trade volume is supplied by Germany, which saw exports increase by 4 thousand tonnes (+17.3%) in September. The country supplies almost three-quarters of the additional trade volume, whilst exports from the Netherlands have remained stable in September. Both the Netherlands and Germany manage to increase the average trade price, contributing to the overall price increase that is visible throughout the year. However, the German price increase (+5.4%) is higher than the price increase for exports from the Netherlands (4.9%).

European imports increase, but demand from Japan remains lower
The increased exports from Germany are destined for European importers, with substantial volume increases in Greece, Spain, and Hungary. Exports from the Netherlands continue to be pressured by reduced demand from Japan, which is partly offset by exports to Greece and the Middle East (Egypt and Algeria).
